5 Simple Tips to Help You Prepare for Your Baby's Newborn Portrait Session
Dec 11, 2025 | By: Angi Randall Photography
Welcoming a newborn baby into your family is one of the most emotional and fleeting seasons of one's life and capturing those delicate first days is such a gift. As a newborn photographer who loves creating colorful, timeless artwork for busy moms, my goal is to always make your session feel peaceful, effortless, and meaningful.
Here are five simple tips to help you feel fully prepared (and beautifully confident!) for your baby’s newborn session.
1. Wear Something Soft and Comfortable
Choosing what to wear can feel overwhelming in those early weeks, so let me simplify it for you: soft, neutral tones always photograph beautifully. Think creams, beiges, blush, soft gray...anything gentle and timeless. Soft, pastel colors are another great option if you want a little bit of color. You can opt for light pink, pale blue or a seafoam green.
Flowy dresses or tops are especially flattering for postpartum bodies and allow you to move comfortably as you cuddle your baby. When you feel good, it shows in every portrait.
2. Keep Baby Cozy and Well Fed
A sleepy, content baby makes for the dreamiest newborn images. Try to feed your baby just before the session or right when you arrive. Whichever works best for you and your little one.
I do keep the studio warm and cozy to help your baby settle naturally into those adorable curled-up, peaceful newborn poses you love.
3. Allow Plenty of Time
Newborn sessions are never rushed. We follow your baby’s rhythm, pausing whenever needed for feeding, diaper changes, and snuggles. Giving yourself a relaxed schedule that day allows you to enjoy the experience fully and helps keep everything calm and stress-free.
I always say that your baby runs the show...lol
4. Bring a Few Baby Essentials
Even though I provide most things for the session, bringing a few familiar items can make transitions smoother. I recommend packing:
-
Diapers and wipes
-
A pacifier (even if it’s not regularly used, it can be magic while posing your baby)
-
A burp cloth and soft receiving blanket
-
Extra breastmilk or formula if bottle feeding
Little comforts go a long way, especially in those tiny moments between poses.
5. Take Care of Yourself Too
This fleeting season is beautiful, but it’s also tender. Make sure you eat beforehand, bring water and snacks, and give yourself grace. A comfortable, relaxed mom helps create an atmosphere where your baby feels calm and where genuine connection can shine in your portraits.
Your Baby’s First Portraits Should Feel Special and Stress Free
My job is to take care of the details so you can simply enjoy these once in a lifetime moments. With a little preparation and a whole lot of love, your newborn portrait session will result in beautiful artwork that you’ll cherish forever.
