One of the most common questions I get before a family session is: “What should we wear?” And I get it, choosing outfits for the whole crew can feel a little overwhelming. But don’t worry! With just a few simple tips, you can feel confident and camera-ready.
A classic look that never goes out of style is jeans and white (or neutral) shirts. It’s simple, timeless, and photographs beautifully for families of any size. The key is to coordinate everyone’s outfits so they feel cohesive without being too “matchy-matchy.”
You can also mix it up with soft creams, light grays, or subtle pastels instead of all white shirts. Jeans or casual pants in denim or neutral tones work well across the family, keeping everyone comfortable while still looking put-together.
The focus should be on your family’s personalities and connection, not busy patterns or clashing colors. And the best part? It’s easy to pull together, even last minute!
If you’re feeling stuck, pick one outfit you love (usually mom’s) and build the rest of the family’s clothing around it. Once you have a starting point, it’s easier to choose colors and styles that complement it.
Trends come and go, but your photos will last for generations. Avoid clothing with large logos, neon colors, or busy graphics. Instead, opt for classic pieces in solid colors or subtle patterns.
Layers and textures photograph beautifully! Think cozy sweaters, denim jackets, linen shirts, or a scarf with fringe. These details add depth and dimension to your photos without being distracting.
Layers also give you options for quick changes during the session. Think a cardigan or jacket you can put on or take off.
Clothes that allow for natural movement create the most relaxed and genuine images. Flowing dresses, comfy sweaters, and clothes kids can play in are always a win. If you’re tugging or adjusting every five minutes, it’ll show in the photos.
If your child hates itchy fabrics or you feel stiff in something too tight, that discomfort will show. Choose outfits everyone feels good in--that confidence and ease will always shine through on camera.
Simple accessories like hats, suspenders for little boys, or a delicate necklace can tie a look together. Just keep it minimal! Accessories should enhance, not distract. Shoes matter too, so skip the sneakers with neon laces and go for something neutral.
At the end of the day, the best outfits are the ones that feel like you. Family photos are about connection and love, not perfect clothes. If you’re comfortable, coordinated, and relaxed, the joy and personality of your family will shine through every image.
And if you ever feel unsure, don’t stress! I’m always here to help guide you through choosing the perfect outfits for your family session.
